The autónomo cuota, explained for foreigners in Spain
If you've moved to Spain and are going self-employed, the cuota de autónomo is the monthly Social Security payment that often surprises newcomers: unlike in some countries, you pay it every month simply for being registered, regardless of how much you invoice.
What you're actually paying for
The cuota covers public healthcare, your state pension contributions, and sickness/maternity cover. Since 2023 it's based on your real net income across 15 brackets, plus the 0.9% MEI pension surcharge in 2026. The calculator above places you in the right bracket.
The flat rate for new arrivals
If you're registering as autónomo for the first time, the tarifa plana of €80/month for your first year applies to you too — being a foreigner doesn't change your eligibility. You will, however, need your NIE and ideally a digital certificate (certificado digital) to handle registration and filings online.
